Trip Permit FAQ
- What is a temporary trip permit for trucks?
- A temporary trip permit lets a commercial vehicle that is not registered or apportioned in a state operate there for a short period, typically a few days, instead of buying full plates. Duration, price and eligibility are set by each state.
- Do I need a separate fuel trip permit?
- Only if the state issues one. Carriers licensed under IFTA report and pay fuel tax through their quarterly return, so most states do not require a separate fuel permit from them. A few states sell a temporary fuel permit to vehicles that are not IFTA licensed.
- Are trip permits the same as oversize or overweight permits?
- No. A trip permit covers registration or fuel tax for a short visit. An oversize/overweight permit authorizes a load that exceeds legal dimensions or weight and is issued per move with its own route and travel conditions.
- Why does the estimate leave some states out of the total?
- Where a state’s fee is not published, depends on weight or axle count, or could not be confirmed, we show a link to the state office instead of guessing. The total only adds confirmed fees.
