Frequently Asked Questions About Freight Fuel Surcharges
- How is a commercial truckload fuel surcharge calculated?
- The standard industry formula is: (Current Diesel Price - Contract Base Peg) ÷ Equipment MPG = FSC Per Mile. For example, if diesel is $3.84, base is $1.25, and MPG is 6.0, the surcharge is ($3.84 - $1.25) / 6.0 = $0.432 per mile.
- What base fuel price peg should I use?
- The base peg is whatever your rate agreement says; it varies by contract. Enter the peg from your agreement. When the diesel price is at or below the peg, no surcharge is due.
- When does the EIA publish official weekly diesel averages?
- The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) publishes the On-Highway Diesel Fuel Price Survey (Form EIA-888) once a week. The release date and the next release date are shown on the EIA gasoline and diesel prices page.
