MC number (operating authority)

A docket number FMCSA issues when a for-hire motor carrier, broker or freight forwarder is granted operating authority.

Operating authority is the legal permission to haul regulated freight for hire across state lines. The MC number identifies that authority on the FMCSA record, while the USDOT number identifies the company.

Check a carrier’s authority status before you give it a load or take one from a broker. The FMCSA record shows whether authority is active and whether the required insurance filings are on file.
