ELD (Electronic Logging Device)

A device wired to a truck’s engine that automatically records driving time and location to track hours of service.

Most drivers who must keep a record of duty status must use an ELD that is registered with FMCSA. The device records when the engine is on and the truck is moving, so driving time cannot be edited by hand.

There are exceptions, including for drivers who need a log on no more than 8 days in any 30-day period and for vehicles with engines older than model year 2000.

Regulation: 49 CFR 395 Subpart B.
